Welcome

Everyone knows that being able to sleep well is essential. Not getting enough sleep causes may cause a lot of problems. The most common problems caused by lack of sleep are:
• Decreased ability to concentrate
• More likely to become irritated
• Increased risk of accidents
• Feeling tired

Long term sleeping problems can cause even more trouble. For example, your immune system will become weaker, making your vulnerable to colds and other infections, and it will take you longer to recover if you get sick.

Having trouble sleeping is a common problem. Virtually everyone has once in a while had some trouble sleeping. Often the problem disappears after a few days but in some cases it just gets worse and worse.

A number of sleeping problems exists, here we focus on not being able to fall asleep and not being able to get adequate amount of quality sleep during the night. If the problem is chronic, it is called insomnia. Note that it says adequate amount of quality sleep. Quality is much more important than the quantity of sleep. Poor quality sleep will not help you much, no matter how much you have slept.

Quality sleep means the deep sleep phase in the sleeping cycle. It is during the deep sleep that the brain relaxes and your energy recharged. If you don’t get enough of deep sleep you feel tired and lack energy no matter how much time you have spent in bed.

You find a lot of opinions about how much you should sleep. The common answer is that most people need 7-8 hours of sleep. But some people sleep just 4-5 hours per night and feel good while others are tired despite sleeping 9-10 hours per night. Every now and then a new report appears telling you that if you sleep less than 7 hours (sometimes 8 hours) per night, you are sleep deprived and may have various health issues. On the other hand, if you can get away with sleeping just 6 hours per night instead of 8 hours, you have managed to increase your (active) life with 12,5%. So it is well worth trying to find out what is personal amount of required sleep. Simply get up in the morning when you wake up, do not stay in bed once you are awaken and try to avoid using an alarm clock.

Is snoring a health problem or just a nuisance for those who have to listen to it? Snoring is indeed a health problem, although in most cases it is not a serious health issue. But snoring prevents the deep sleep, meaning that the quality of sleep will be poor. You can learn more about what can be done about snoring under the snoring category.
